Many games from PS5 reveal may be targeting 30 FPS, says Digital Foundry

Let's take a look at the frame rates.

What you need to know

  • Yesterday, Sony revealed the PS5 and many games.
  • Digital Foundry conducted an analysis of the footage.
  • It seems like a lot of them are running at 30 FPS.
  • Many games also employ dynamic resolution to maintain performance.

On Thursday, Sony revealed the PlayStation 5 (PS5) with a lot of game reveals. Digital Foundry — known for its in-depth analyses of resolution and frame rate for many titles — provided commentary on the show in an 80-minute video released Friday.

The team discussed various resolution and frame rate targets for PS5 games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart.

Just based on Digital Foundry's analysis, here are what it thinks are the expected frame rates for the games in the next generation.

30 FPS

  • Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart|30 FPS
  • Stray|30 FPS
  • Returnal|30 FPS
  • Kena: Bridge of Spirits|30 FPS
  • Demon's Souls|30 FPS, but may offer 60 FPS mode
  • Destruction Allstars|Probably 30 FPS
  • Horizon: Forbidden West|Probably 30 FPS
  • Oddworld: Soulstorm|Probably 30 FPS

60 FPS

  • Gran Turismo 7|60 FPS
  • Sackboy: A Big Adventure|60 FPS
  • Godfall|60 FPS
  • Astro's Playroom|60 FPS
  • Resident Evil VIII: Village|Probably 60 FPS

Digital Foundry noted that some games appeared to employ dynamic resolution that lowered the visual quality to around 1500p, while maintaining performance. Many games were also native 4K instead of checkerboarded 4K found on PlayStation 4 Pro.

The team said that Sony appears to be targeting 30 FPS with increased visual quality for the PS5, while Microsoft seems to be focusing on 60 FPS and 120 FPS frame rates.

"The emphasis on extreme detail also highlights the priorities of most of the developers showcased here — while Microsoft is talking about 4K 60 FPS and even 120 FPS frame rates as the design targets for its hardware, the vast majority of the titles in yesterday's PS5 presentation were concentrating on 30 FPS instead," Digital Foundry editor Richard Leadbetter wrote.
