Samsung is reportedly working on a cheaper version of the Galaxy S20

Just like the Galaxy S20, the S20 'Fan Edition' is expected to come with 5G support.

What you need to know

  • Samsung could soon launch a "Lite" version of the Galaxy S20 with a more affordable price tag.
  • It is apparently being referred to as the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition internally.
  • The phone is expected to be available in both 4G and 5G-enabled variants.

Earlier this year, Samsung introduced the Galaxy S10 Lite, a more affordable version of the flagship Galaxy S10 with slightly less impressive tech specs. Now, a report from SamMobile claims Samsung is developing a similar "Lite" version of the Galaxy S20.

According to the report, the new Galaxy S20 variant is internally referred to as the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition and will be available in three variants. The global variant of the phone with model number SM-G780 will be available with and without 5G connectivity. In the U.S., Samsung will only offer the 5G-enabled variant of the phone with model number SM-G781.

Sadly, however, the report doesn't reveal much about the phone's hardware. It is expected to have at least 128GB of storage and ship with Android 10-based One UI 2.5 out of the box. Samsung is expected to launch the next iteration of its custom Android skin along with the Galaxy Note 20 series in August.

Since the Galaxy S10 Lite has the same Snapdragon 855 processor as the Galaxy S10, it is possible that the U.S. variant of the upcoming Galaxy S20 Fan Edition will have a Snapdragon 865 chipset under the hood. In most other departments, however, we expect it to be less impressive than the S20. There is currently no word on how much the phone may cost or when it will be formally unveiled. It also remains to be seen if a Galaxy Note 20 Fan Edition will debut alongside the S20 Fan Edition.
